My mother gave me some linen fabric with a beautiful print. She thinks it belonged to her grandmother. I wanted to make clothing from it, but it had holes in it, especially along the fold lines.

I decided to cut it into rectangles in a way that would minimize the holes so I could make a wall hanging with some other linen fabric. I'll be repairing and decorating the hanging with darning, a few patches, and embroidery stitches.

Since the rectangles aren't the same size, I'll be adding strips of colored fabric to their edges to make them equal. Then I will sew them together with sashing to make one big rectangle.

This particular rectangle had two holes. I darned one that was near the vines and embroidered a leaf over it so it would look like part of the vine. I took some small stitches over a tiny hole with brown embroidery thread to match the color.

Crumpled beige fabric with some holes. There’s a print of vines and Asian-style lanterns in brown, taupe, red, and yellow.

This is the fabric that started this whole project.
